On Production, Instagram, and Filters

First, Taylor Swift’s 1989 is delightful.  There’s the wonderful layer that skims over the hooks, reminiscent of mid-80s pop.   But, to use web speak, that’s just a style sheet, just presentation.

Production.  Right?  But the structure, the hooks, the melodies, that girl can write.  She balances tender with snark, never letting you forget there is a sting in the tail.

And yeah, I just listened to it for the first time last week.

But as it spins (in my mind, because we all know Spotify doesn’t really spin, sigh) I wonder what it would sound like if I could filter the sound, the way you filter a photo on Instagram.

Ryan Adams asked the same questions, and answered it.  His version of Blank Space is charming.

Note that he leaves the sting out, you won’t hear  “cause darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream.”

Could I apply a Mitch Easter filter?  A Mark Ronson?  Or, God forbid, and forgive me please, but Stock, Aitken, Waterman?  Because you know someone, somewhere would want that.

But really, it matters not.

I really think ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ could be on the radio now.  It’s that timeless.

The girl knows Fine Young Cannibals.  Strangely charming.
